Calculator Assumptions
To make the calculator as simple as possible, we’ve made a few assumptions:
- You are eligible for the full personal allowance (£12,570) – with a standard 1257L tax code.
- Personal income tax is charged at 20% on income up to £50,270, 40% on income up to £125,140, and 45% thereafter.
- Employees’ NICs are charged at 8% on earnings over £12,570 (the ‘primary threshold’) and at 2% over £50,270.
- Employers’ NICs is 15% on earnings above £5,000 (the ‘secondary threshold’)
- Your holiday pay is ‘rolled up’ (advanced) and included in your weekly gross pay.
- You are not enrolled in the umbrella company’s workplace pension.
- We have included the option to contribute to a personal pension through salary sacrifice. Some umbrellas provide this option.
- You’re not making student loan repayments out of your pay.

A note about net take home pay calculators
There are dozens of umbrella company calculators available online, but they often yield different results.
This is often because many variables go into calculating net take-home pay, and most calculators don’t account for everything (e.g., pension contributions, student loans, different tax codes).
In some cases, the calculations are either incorrect or outdated.
Worse still, on some online calculators, you enter your daily rate and are then asked to fill in a form to receive your results!
You can use the government calculator (below) – and yes, our results match!
Government payslip checking tool
If you want to check that your payslip is correct, try the Government’s new umbrella payslip checking tool. It was updated in December 2025.
General advice for umbrella employees
- Request a tailored take-home pay calculation if you want to use an umbrella company for your payroll.
- Read our article on how to make sure the deductions on your payslip are legitimate.
- If you currently use an umbrella company and have any questions about your pay, please contact your account manager.
- As an umbrella company employee, you are ultimately responsible for choosing a compliant umbrella company and paying the correct amounts of tax and NI.
- Therefore, ensure you undertake thorough due diligence and never be tempted to use a tax avoidance scheme (non-compliant umbrella company) because the consequences could be severe.
